    Three parameters of an optical module

    (1) Central wavelength

    The operating wavelength of the optical module is actually a range, but there is a more obvious difference between single mode and multi-mode. Then expressed, generally named according to the most central wavelength.

    The general central wavelength is 850nm, 1310nm and 1550nm, etc.

    1) 850nm (MM, multi-mode, low cost (optical components are cheaper) but short transmission distance (multi-mode transmission, different wavelengths affect each other), generally only 500m to 3KM transmission);

    2) 1310nm (SM, single mode, large loss in the transmission process, easy to absorb energy by the medium but small dispersion, generally used for transmission within 40km);

    3) 1550nm (SM, single mode, small loss but large dispersion in the transmission process, generally used for long-distance transmission of more than 40km, the farthest can be direct transmission without relay 120km).

    (2) Transmission distance

    Because the optical fiber itself has side effects such as dispersion, loss, and insertion loss on the optical signal. Therefore, the distance that light emitted by different types of light sources can travel is not the same. When connecting to an optical interface, select optical modules and optical fibers based on the farthest signal transmission distance. The transmission distance of the optical module is divided into short distance, medium distance and long distance. It is generally considered that 2km and below are short distances, 10-20km are medium distances, and 30km and above are long distances.

    (3) Transmission rate

    Transmission rate refers to the number of bits of data transmitted per second (bits), in bps. Transmission rate as low as 100 megabits, up to 400Gbps, commonly used 155Mbps, 1.25Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps, 100Gbps and other rates. In addition, optical modules in optical fiber storage systems (SAN) also have three rates of 2Gbps, 4Gbps and 8Gbps
