    10G PON Technology Development

    (1) 10G PON Technology development route

    EPON dominated by IEEE, and GPON dominated by ITU are both evolving to 10 GPON stage at presnt and the subsequent planning is both 100G PON. There are certain differences in the specific evolution routes, and the corresponding evolution route is shown in the following figure:

    The 10G EPON symmetric and asymmetric technical standards and products have been perfected, In addition, it has the advantage of coexisting with EPON terminal in the same ODN network without adding a multiplexer. After the centralized procurement of OLT in 2016, OLT's 10G PON optical modules have been slashed in price

    . Considering the future evolution of the network, the operators began to develop 10G EPON in advance at the local end, and still used EPON ONT in the client to carry out FTTH construction. At the same time, because the price difference between symmetric optical module and asymmetric optical module is not large, and considering the bandwidth ratio of asymmetric 10G EPON upstream and downstream link is 1:10, in order to avoid the upgrade demand caused by the subsequent uplink service development, operators are more inclined to deploy 10G EPON symmetric mode in OLT  side. The next step for EPON will evolve toward 100G PON technology.

    (3) GPON technology evolution

    For the 10G GPON standard, the asymmetric XG-PON technical standard and products have been perfected. The fixed wavelength symmetric 10G GPON standard XGS-PON was released in February 2016. Due to the relatively mature devices involved in the standard, some products of the manufacturers are ready for commercial use. The NGPON2 (TWDMPON) standard with adjustable wavelength has been perfected. At present, OLT products have been commercially available in Europe and America.At the same time, there are corresponding MDU products for the enterprise dedicated line market. The optical module with adjustable wavelength of NGPON2 is expensive and difficult to achieve.After ITU supplemented the symmetrical fixed wavelength 10G standard (XGS-PON), some manufacturers believe that NGPON2 may be skipped and directly evolve to the 4*25G 100G PON solution, and it is possible to integrate with the 100G EPON standard.

    In the short term, the ONT price of 10G PON will not fall to the existing price range of EPON / GPON, so it is inevitable to face the situation of coexistence of 10 GPON and user side EPON / GPON terminal. Because GPON and XGPON terminals coexist in the same ODN network, WDM1r modules need to be added, which limits the deployment of XG-PON in the current network. Therefore, the advantageous manufacturers have the Combo PON scheme of encapsulate GPON and XGPON  optical modules and WDM1r in one optical module. However, the optical module of Combo PON scheme can only be packaged by XFP, and the single board can only realize 8 PON ports (conventional SFP + packaging, and the single board can realize 16 PON ports). Meanwhile, due to the increase of WDM1r insertion loss, the luminous power requirements of optical modules are higher. At present, the luminous power of B + / N1 can only be realized, and the C + / N2a high power module cannot be provided in the short term, which limits the application of long-distance large spectral ratio scenarios.
