Optical communication | The key technology of 100G Ethernet, have you got it?

    Post time: Nov-22-2019

Lead: 100G Ethernet from research to commercial, need to solve the key technologies of interface, packaging, transmission, key components, etc. The key technologies of the current 100G Ethernet interface include physical layer, channel convergence technology, multi-fiber channel and wave Sub-multiplexing technology.

    Key technologies for 100G Ethernet

    1.Router, switch processing capabilities

Includes collection capacity, telling table lookups, traffic management, port density, and thermal design and energy efficiency design. When the bandwidth of each port rises by 10 times, it will bring higher requirements to the system design. We know that when designing system switching capacity, we will consider the speedup ratio. This is because we need a certain message additional information overhead when the message is exchanged between boards. The acceleration ratio can generally be considered between 1.5 and 2, which means When the physical interface is 100G, the required backplane switching capacity is 150G~200G, and the bidirectional is 300G~400G per slot switching capacity.

2.High-speed interface of dedicated message processing chip

Including high-speed SerDes, high-speed large-capacity cache is the key technology of system design, SerDes speed and density. As mentioned above, on the next-generation high-end platform, the 10Gbps SerDes 60-80 pairs required for each slot, if converted to 3.125Gbps SerDes, it needs to be 240-320 pairs, which is almost impossible to achieve physically. Therefore, the use of higher speed SerDes is the key to achieving high-end platforms.

3.Utilize existing infrastructure for long transmission

The emergence of the 100G interface provides a very good “pipe” for the interconnection of the core/backbone routers, but how to make this pipe very long, the so-called ULH transmission, has become an important issue for the backbone network.  We are very pleased to see that in recent years, many research institutes, operators and equipment manufacturers have released more and more frequent news such as “40G or 100G to achieve long-distance transmission of thousands or even thousands of kilometers”, etc. It is the industry that is researching how to achieve high-speed ultra-long-haul transmission of single-wavelength 40G or even 100G while using existing infrastructure as much as possible.

The development of 100G Ethernet is to consider the network capacity and respond to the pressure of increasing bandwidth. 100G not only represents the rate, not only 10 times faster than 10G in data transmission rate, but more importantly, it brings Greatly enhanced and rich in functionality.
