    The three major parameters of optical modules

    (i) Center wavelength
    The working wavelength of the optical module is actually a range, but there will be obvious differences between single-mode and multi-mode. Then the expression is generally named according to the most central wavelength.

    The unit of central wavelength is a nanometer (nm),
    The general center wavelengths are 850nm, 1310nm and 1550nm, etc.

    1)850nm (MM, multi-mode, low cost (optical components are cheaper) but short transmission distance (multi-mode transmission, mutual influence between different wavelengths), generally only 500m to 3KM);

    2)1310nm (SM, single-mode, large loss during transmission, easy to absorb energy by medium but small dispersion, generally used for transmission within 40km);

    3)1550nm (SM, single-mode, slight loss but large dispersion during transmission, generally used for long-distance transmission over 40km, up to 120km without relay).

    (ii) Transmission distance
    Because the optical fiber itself has side effects such as dispersion, loss, and insertion loss to the optical signal. Therefore, the distances that light emitted by different types of light sources can travel are different. When connecting optical interfaces, select optical modules and optical fibers according to the farthest signal transmission distance. The transmission distance of the optical module is divided into three types: short distance, medium distance and long-distance. It is generally considered that 2km and below are short distances, 10 to 20km are medium distances, and 30km and above are long distances.

    (iii) Transmission rate
    The transmission rate refers to the number of bits (bits) of data transmitted per second, in bps. The transmission rate is as low as 100M, up to 400Gbps, and commonly used rates are 155Mbps, 1.25Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps, 100Gbps and so on. In addition, there are three rates of 2Gbps, 4Gbps and 8Gbps optical modules in the optical storage system (SAN).
